When Your Child Makes Better Decisions Than You. Be Grateful!

Good morning, Grateful Americans.

Allow me to share something that gave me hope that even in this troubled world, and in our troubled lives, there’s still reason to be grateful.

Yesterday I tearfully watched my eldest take her oath as a member of the bar.

I thought about all the sacrifices she made. All that burning of the proverbial midnight oil, and then the self-doubt that followed it. Nights she wondered if any of it would pay off. Mornings she got up and did the work anyway.

Then the day comes when everything she put in, for this goal, turns into a result. She raised her right hand and swore an oath to the law of this country.

That’s more proof that agency works nine times out of ten. And those are odds you should always bet on.

Nobody handed her that oath. She earned it one hard choice at a time. She skipped what felt good tonight for what would be good years from now. My daughter has made more mature, delayed-gratification decisions than her old man ever did. I’ll own that, and I’m proud to.

This country gave our family the chance. She took it and ran with it. That’s stewardship. You take what you were given and build something worth handing down.

There, another reason to be grateful.

Thank you for allowing me to share. In the end, as parents, we do our best raising our children, and we pray they make better choices than the ones we missed.

Thank you, and be well.
