Most people live with a clear sense of right and wrong, and they recognize that cold-heartedness and greed exist at every level. They see the soft bigotry of low expectations for what it is: a quiet insult that lowers the bar under the guise of kindness. Take taxes. Reasonable people can debate the right rate, but almost everyone agrees it shouldn’t be zero or a hundred percent. Confiscating all productivity punishes success and subsidizes failure, creating the nanny state instead of real help. Most folks understand that a helping hand should teach someone to fish, not become their permanent crutch.
This brings me to my own choice. As a grateful immigrant who came here for opportunity, I’ve come to proudly lean conservative. Not because it’s perfect, but because it better matches the values most Americans still live by: agency paired with gratitude, responsibility without cold indifference, and ordered liberty that doesn’t confiscate success or subsidize failure. I believe the majority, natural-born and immigrant alike, still hold this classical liberal view, even if the modern left has drifted far from it.
When you strip away the euphemisms, the modern left’s approach reveals its core: confiscate productivity, subsidize failure, and call it compassion. Most Americans, when they look at their own lives, reject that bargain. They want a system that rewards effort, offers a hand up without making it a way of life, and measures success by what you build, not what you’re given. That’s why I stand where I do.
