The Gas Pump Beat the Numbers.
Nobody Grieves the War That Didn’t Happen.
Your heart was in the right place. I think your vote was wrong. Gas and the Affordable Care Act bill beat record income, low poverty and a closed border.
Folks, your heart was in the right place last night. I still think you made the wrong call.
I mean that. The people who flipped the Senate and the House aren’t my enemies. They’re my neighbors. They fill up at the same station I do. They looked at the last two years and said, “Not like this.”
This was a referendum on Donald Trump. The American people have spoken. Not the first time this has happened and it won’t be the last. Democrats took the House. Democrats took the Senate, flipping seven seats. Texas, Kansas, Iowa, South Carolina and Ohio went blue in Senate races, and Trump carried every one of those states by double digits in 2024.
That’s a message. I heard it. I disagree with it. Both of those things are true, and I’m an imperfect man saying so.
THE NUMBERS VS. THE PUMP
This part drives me nuts.
The Census Bureau says the official poverty rate fell to 10.2% in 2025. That’s the third straight year of decline and one of the lowest rates on record. Child poverty hit a historic low. You can’t touch a poverty rate.
Real median household income hit $87,460. Highest ever recorded. You can’t touch a Census table either.
Those are real numbers. I didn’t make them up.
But nobody fills their tank with a Census report.
Gas was about $3.05 a gallon a year ago. This morning AAA has it at $4.12. Diesel is over $6. Election Day gas was the highest on any congressional Election Day ever recorded.
You can touch a pump. You watch the numbers roll past fifty, sixty, seventy dollars and you feel it in your gut. A truck driver feels it. A mom with three kids and a forty-mile commute feels it.
That gap, between what the charts say and what the wallet says, ate this midterm whole.
THE OBAMACARE BILL
Gas isn’t the only bill people can touch. They open the health insurance statement and it hits them in the gut too.
Let me say it plain. That’s Obamacare. The premiums that go up every year. The deductible you never meet. The plan that costs more and covers less. That’s the Affordable Care Act. It was never affordable. It was propped up with taxpayer subsidies, and when the props wobble, you feel the real price.
Nobody on my side said that out loud. Not clearly. Not over and over. So voters walked into the booth holding a healthcare bill they blamed on Trump, when the name at the top of it was Obama’s.
That’s on us. You can be right on the policy and still lose if you never tell people whose bill it is.
THE OPEN BORDER IS NOW ZERO
Remember the open border? The caravans. The crowds at the wire. The nightly news.
The border? Practically closed. Southwest border apprehensions dropped 95% compared to the Biden years. Lowest encounters in the agency’s history. Seventeen straight months of zero releases. Not low. Zero.
And here’s the catch. A closed border is quiet. Nobody sees what doesn’t happen at the fence anymore.
THE CONTRAST
Put it side by side.
Poverty down. Income at a record. The border shut. The healthcare bill carrying Obama’s name, not Trump’s.
And still, folks voted the other way.
So the question isn’t whether the numbers were good. They were. The question is why people didn’t feel them.
WHY THEY VOTED THE OTHER WAY
Now let me say something about my own side.
Trump is good at bluster. He’s not good at feeling your pain out loud. And when your pain is at the pump, bluster sounds like he doesn’t care.
Here’s the speech I wish he gave. This is mine, not his. He never said it:
“I understand, folks. I could not in good conscience as an American let Iran get a nuclear weapon. I’d rather lose the election than let that happen. We are squeezing them like an anaconda — no boots on the ground, no bodies coming home — while they lose billions a day. That’s the trade.”
That’s it. Name the cost. Name what you bought with it. Look people in the eye.
Preventing a catastrophe has a problem. Nobody grieves the city that didn’t burn. Nobody holds a vigil for the bomb that was never built. Deterrence is boring. It’s invisible by design. When it works, it looks like nothing happened.
So voters saw the cost. They never saw the alternative. Nobody showed it to them.
That’s accountability, and it runs both ways. If you’re asking people to pay more for something they can’t see, you owe them the explanation.
Churchill knew this.
Winston Churchill spent most of the 1930s in the wilderness. His own party pushed him to the back benches. They called him a warmonger. A crank. Yesterday’s man.
He was right early. He warned about Hitler while the respectable people were making deals.
By the time everybody agreed with him, the bombs were falling on London.
That’s the cruel math of leadership. The man who tries to prevent the disaster gets punished for the price of prevention. The man who would have let it happen gets rewarded, because he never had to explain the alternative.
I’m not saying Trump is Churchill. I’m saying the voter math is the same. Prevention costs money today. Disaster costs lives tomorrow. And tomorrow doesn’t vote.
THE SWAMP DIDN’T HELP
I won’t pretend the only problem was messaging.
Ron DeSantis sat down with Stephen A. Smith the night before the election. He’s term-limited, so he’s got nothing to lose, and he said it straight: “This swamp here is the worst it’s ever been.”
When the President’s own former lawyer, Alina Habba, signs a reported $50 million deal with the family of a Venezuelan banker, and that banker gets a presidential pardon two weeks after she starts the job, people notice. She denies any role in the pardon. Trump himself called the deal “not acceptable.” But voters don’t need a verdict to smell something.
I said the same thing about the Biden family’s foreign money. Same moral category. If you want power, put your assets on hold and serve. That goes for my side too.
Allegiance is to the country. Not to a party. Not to a man.
SPINE, NOT KNEES
So here’s where I land.
To my neighbors who voted the other way: I respect you. I think you traded a quiet win for a loud pain. I hope I’m wrong.
To my own side: stop blustering. Feel the pain, say it out loud, then make the case. If you can’t explain the trade, don’t be surprised when the people walk away from it.
And to myself: no whining. Losing is part of a free country. That’s the deal I signed up for when I raised my right hand. You don’t sulk. You get up, you make the argument better, and you earn it back.
Gratitude is spine, not knees.
